Safdarjung Tomb

ABOUT THE LOCATION

Tomb of Safdarjung was built in 1754 when Mirza Muqim Abul Mansur Khan, who was also known as Safdarjung was made the prime minister(Wazir Ul-Mamlak-I-Hindustan) of the Empire of Mughals. A sandstone and marble mausoleum in Mughal architectural style. It is spacious and has red brown coloured walls and structures.

Being the last monument with tomb and garden of the Mughals, the Safdarjung Tomb is built just like the Humayun Tomb with the tomb enclosed by the garden. It has four main characteristics that includes the mausoleum surrounded by char bagh, a ninefold floor plan, a five-part facade and a large podium with a hidden stairway.

Just like other mausoleums; Humayun’s Tomb or Taj Mahal, the entering gateway gives a perfect view of the Safdarjung mausoleum. The red brown walls and the central white dome is built over a terrace. The architects have great angular and shapes knowledge as the central chamber is square in shape and the eight partitions with a cenotaph in the middle. The partitions are rectangular shaped and the corners are shaped octagonal.

POINTS NOT IN FAVOUR

1. Only still photography

Safdarjung Tomb comes under the surveillance of Archaeological Survey of India according to which the videography is not inside the main gate. Also for the photoshoot, none of the equipments other than the camera can be carried inside the gateway, including reflectors, gimbal, tripods, LED lights, etc. It turns out to be the worst point for the shoot.

2. Unavailability of Changing rooms

The changing rooms are not available at the Safdarjung’s Tomb but washrooms. The couple has to come ready for the shoot with covering all the travelling and distance.

3. No privacy

Delhi has many monuments including the Safdarjung’s Tomb, making it a tourist place. This is a reason of continuous coming and going of the Delhi based visitors or the tourists coming from outside the Delhi. This turns out to be a problem for creating a private and comfortable environment for the couple and sacrificing the privacy.

4. No Drone camera

The many restrictions regarding the camera and the shoot, the Archaeological Survey of India also denies the use of drone cameras at the location. The reasons being the history and the heritage.

OVERALL REVIEW

In summers, visiting this mausoleum during evenings is much easier and preferable, because a gentle breeze during the dusk is so much better than facing the scorching sun. The most popular timing for visiting this tourist location in this season is during evenings, around 4 to 5 pm.The cons are more than the pros of the location but taking the history and architectural praises that the Tomb of Safdarjung gathered it is also a good option for the shoot. The monument carries its own relevance and beauty that gives advantage of the great past and the vivid culture that existed and is still existing in the Indian culture.
